Where did you grow up?
New York City
Is there a message or lesson you were given at a young age that's impacted who you are today?
An overriding theme in my life is respect for others. From a very early age, my mother talked to me about treating all people fairly and always being kind. Having this be such a huge thing in our house, not only impacted my ability to grow and nurture meaningful relationships, but to also create a really special network and community of friends that's made me feel supported as I build and grow my business.
Do you have a morning ritual?
Well, I can't do anything without coffee, which my husband makes for me every morning! As for a daily ritual, it's about making time for myself and giving special attention to my skin, hair and body. When I take my shower, I take the time to decompress & relax - everyday I do a scrub or dry brush. Depending on my schedule and getting my son to where he needs to be, some days this happens in the morning, others it takes place in the evening. The ritual for me, is making sure it happens.
What's something you incorporate daily or seasonally to make life easier?
These days, I focus on breathing correctly. It may sound silly, but a lot of people, myself included, breathe the wrong way. Especially when we are stressed or anxious, we tend to hold our breath or take rapid and shallow inhales and exhales. Over the past two years, ever since leaving my career in fashion, I've really started to be mindful of my breath to ensure I am getting the oxygen I need to keep stress levels down and try to be present. Taking long, deep breaths, especially when faced with conflict or anxiety, is extremely important and helpful. Just to be clear, I'm still working on this daily - lol!
What is your favorite way to relieve stress?
I find my days are a lot less stressful if I am able to sweat, breathe and use my body. My favorite workouts are either hot yoga or The Class by Taryn Toomey - I find them both extremely detoxifying and focused. The key is not allowing myself to jump into anxiety and let it take over my whole being. I've learned to be more mindful by stopping, closing my eyes - maybe doing a small meditation - and taking three giant deep breaths. Mindfulness has taken a lot of work for me and I’ll have to continue to work on it the rest of my life. Staying present and in the moment is something I'm really focused on doing better. It doesn't always come easy for me, but I see the change happening.
What does wellness mean to you?
Wellness to me is not just one thing but, it’s how I live my life - it’s all encompassing and about balance. I don’t believe in extremes. If I can live a healthy life in the way I eat and what I put on and in my body, it not only helps me feel like the best version of myself, but it also reflects outward - it’s synergistic. Since working on cultivating a healthier more present life, I've found a lot more balance - things just started to click and work together. I think balance is key - which from time to time can mean letting it all go and just doing whatever I feel like, even if that is a pint of ice cream at 10pm!
Speaking of what we put in our bodies, what's your favorite healthy restaurant in New York City?
And on our bodies... favorite go-to outfit?
Right now it's my wide leg cropped Kamm pants, a great white tee-shirt, my espadrilles or No. 6 clog sandals... and sometimes my camouflage jacket. I'm pretty simple and really like clean shapes! I'm also usually wearing one of my many printed long scarves - I'm kind of addicted. I also just got these Tom Ford Stacy Aviator sunglasses and had my prescription put in them - I never want to take them off!
Best staple piece you have in your closet right now?
I'm addicted to really good white t-shirts or tanks from either Rag & Bone, Isabel Marant or James Perse - also anything with stripes AND really good men's style blazer. I have a really old Helmut Land black one, which never goes out of style. I also have a Band of Outsiders grey felted wool blazer that I adore!
Go-to non-toxic beauty product right now?
It's hard to choose, I love everything we stock for different reasons. A few I am using right now...
Marie Veronique - sheer glow tinted moisturizer. This is all the makeup I ever use. Well this and an Olio e Osso tinted lip balm that I use on lips and cheeks. The tinted moisturizer has 30 SPF and comes in light medium. It's so sheer, I love it!
Marie Veronique - gentle retinol serum. This is an incredible product! I use it every night. It's super gentle but does a great job of resurfacing and working on small lines and wrinkles while you're sleeping.
Joanna Vargas daily serum. The scent of it alone is amazing, but I also find it's incredibly high performance when it comes to keeping my skin balanced and clear.
African Botanic - Neroli infused Marula face oil. It also has a heavenly smell and is quite a potent anti-aging face oil.
Bottega Organica - Balance Face Cream. This is such a rich hydrating cream and has prawn sage in it which is known to be one of the most anti-aging botanicals. I'm 49 so that works for me!
Grow Alchemist lip balm. We just started stocking this. It's great because it has peptides, antioxidants and omegas but also a beautiful shine!
What's next for Onda?
The most immediate next thing is opening our store. We've designed a beautiful space that feels like a destination - a place for people to visit, linger, learn, shop and hang out. The store represents the Onda lifestyle. From the second you walk in, all of your senses will be affected. It's been really fun to design! We also recently announced that we will have a treatment room, which we look forward to having our community experience!
Oh! And we are working on a few of our own products.
Really, since we are still so new, everything is next and anything is a possibility, which is really exciting!
